How to see who unfollowed you on Instagram
Instagram never tells you who unfollowed you. How to check one person in seconds, or find everyone who left by hand, by data export or with a tracker.
Instagram will happily tell you when someone follows you. It will never tell you when someone leaves. Your follower count ticks down by one and that is the whole notification.
That asymmetry is deliberate, and it means there is no button anywhere in the app that answers the question. Every method below works the same way underneath: take a list of your followers now, compare it to a list from earlier, and look at what's missing.
Did one particular person unfollow you?
If you're wondering about one account, you can answer it in seconds without any tool. Open your profile, tap Followers, and type their name into the search bar. If they don't come up, they no longer follow you. Their profile tells you too: anyone who follows you shows a small Follows you label, so if it's gone, so are they.
Two things can look like an unfollow and aren't. If their profile won't open at all, they may have deactivated, deleted or renamed the account, or blocked you. And if you'd removed them as a follower yourself, they'll be missing from the list for that reason.
Three ways to find everyone who unfollowed you
1. By hand, for small accounts
Open your follower list, screenshot it end to end, and do the same next week. It is free and completely private. It is also unworkable past a few hundred followers, and screenshots are miserable to diff.
2. Instagram's own data export
Instagram will send you a copy of your follower list. In Accounts Center, go to Your information and permissions, then Export your information, choose Export to device, and select only Followers and following. Request one today, request another in a month, and compare the followers files from the two downloads. Anyone in the first and not the second unfollowed you in between. This is the most private option and it costs nothing.
The catch is turnaround. Instagram says an export can take up to 30 days, although a followers-only one usually arrives much sooner, and the download link expires after 4 days. Comparing two lists of hundreds of usernames is a spreadsheet job: paste the old list in one column and the new one in another, and mark anything in the old list that the new one doesn't contain.
3. A follower tracker

Why people unfollow (and when it doesn't matter)
Before you read too much into a number, it's worth separating the causes. Most drops are not about you:
- Deactivated and deleted accounts. These leave your follower list exactly like an unfollow does, and there is no way to tell the difference from the outside.
- Purges of spam and bot accounts. Instagram removes these in waves, and a sudden dip usually means a sweep rather than an exodus.
- Follow-for-follow accounts. They follow, wait for the return follow, and leave a few days later. These show up clearly in a tracker as short-lived followers, and they tend to linger in the list of people you follow who never followed back long after they have gone.
- Genuine disinterest. Someone's feed changed, or yours did. This is the only category worth acting on.
The useful signal is not the count, it's the pattern. One person leaving after a post is noise. Fifteen people leaving after the same post is feedback. Seeing them by name and by date is what turns a number into something you can actually act on, and it's why the who-left-you list is sorted newest first.
Is it safe to use an unfollower app?
It depends entirely on what the app asks for. The single most important question: does it want your Instagram password?
If it does, walk away. Handing your credentials to a third party breaks Instagram's terms, puts your account at risk of being locked, and gives a stranger the ability to post as you. No follower list is worth that.
Tools that only read public data, the ones that ask for your handle and nothing else, carry none of that risk, because there is nothing to steal and nothing to misuse. How do I check who unfollowed me on Instagram?
For one person, search their name in your own Followers list, or look for the Follows you label on their profile. For everyone, you need a copy of your follower list from before: compare two Instagram data exports from different dates, or use a tracker that saves your list and compares each scan with the last.
Can Instagram tell me who unfollowed me?
