How to find who doesn't follow you back on Instagram

Find every one-way follow on your Instagram account — the people you follow who never followed back — and decide which ones are worth keeping.

Published Updated

Unlike unfollowers, this one is answerable from a single snapshot. You don't need history or a baseline — everything required is visible right now, in two lists Instagram already shows you.

Take everyone you follow, take everyone who follows you, and subtract. What's left is the set of one-way follows: accounts you're subscribed to that aren't subscribed back.

Why the ratio matters more than the number

On average, somewhere between 30% and 40% of the accounts a typical user follows don't follow back. That is entirely normal — it includes every celebrity, brand, news account and meme page you've ever tapped follow on.

The number only becomes interesting when you split it by intent. Following a musician who has never heard of you is fine. Following two hundred accounts from a follow-for-follow spree that quietly dropped you is a different matter, and it's the second group that quietly drags down how your account reads to anyone who lands on it.

Checking by hand

For a small account, this is genuinely doable. Open your following list, open your follower list, and cross-reference. Instagram even helps a little: under Following → Least interacted with, it surfaces accounts you rarely engage with, which overlaps heavily with the one-way set.

Past a few hundred accounts, cross-referencing by hand stops being realistic. That's the point at which the subtraction is worth automating — it's the same arithmetic, just done for you.

How to find non-followers with Ghosted

This works on a first scan — no baseline or second visit required.

  1. STEP 01

    Enter your handle

Type your Instagram username on the home page. No password and no app install; the scan reads only what your profile already shows publicly.

  2. STEP 02

    Let the scan finish

Ghosted reads both your follower list and your following list, which takes roughly twenty seconds.

  3. STEP 03

    Open the non-followers list

The Don't follow back list shows every account you follow that doesn't follow you, so you can decide who stays.

Who to actually unfollow

Resist the urge to mass-unfollow everything on the list. Two reasons: some of those accounts you genuinely want in your feed, and Instagram rate-limits rapid unfollowing in a way that can get an account temporarily restricted.

A workable pass, in order:

  1. 1Accounts you don't recognise. If you can't place them, they aren't earning their spot in your feed.
  2. 2Follow-for-follow leftovers. Accounts that followed you, got a follow back, then left. A tracker will have flagged these when they dropped you.
  3. 3Dormant accounts. Nothing posted in a year is nothing worth following.
  4. 4Keep everything else. Brands, friends who don't use Instagram much, and people whose posts you actually like are all fine one-way follows.

Common questions

Does Instagram show who doesn't follow me back?

Not directly. Instagram shows your followers and your following separately but never subtracts one from the other. You can cross-reference the two lists manually, or use a tool that does the comparison for you.

Is it rude to unfollow someone who doesn't follow back?

No. Following on Instagram is a subscription, not a contract. Most one-way follows are brands, public figures and accounts that never intended to follow anyone back in the first place.

How many people can I unfollow in a day?

Instagram doesn't publish its limits, and they vary with account age and history. Unfollowing in small batches spread over several days is the safe approach; mass-unfollowing hundreds of accounts in one session risks a temporary action block.

Will someone be notified if I unfollow them?

Instagram sends no notification when you unfollow someone. They can only find out by checking their own follower list, or by using a tracker of their own.
