How to see who doesn't follow you back on Instagram

Unlike unfollowers, this one is answerable from a single snapshot. You don't need history or a baseline, because everything required is visible right now, in two lists Instagram already shows you.

Take everyone you follow, take everyone who follows you, and subtract. What's left is the set of one-way follows: accounts you're subscribed to that aren't subscribed back. Instagram never does that subtraction for you, so here are four ways to do it, from a single account in seconds to your whole list at once.

Check if one person follows you back

If there's one account you're wondering about, you don't need a tool. Either of these takes seconds in the Instagram app:

• Open their profile. If they follow you, Instagram shows a small Follows you label on it. No label means they don't.
• Search your own Followers list. Open your profile, tap Followers, and type their name into the search bar. If they don't come up, they don't follow you.

Neither leaves a trace. Looking at a profile or searching your own list sends nobody a notification.

Go through your whole list by hand

For a small account this is genuinely doable. Open your Following list and work down it, checking each account for the Follows you label or against your Followers list. Two built-in features make it faster:

• Sort by date followed. On your Following list, tap the two-arrow icon next to Sort by Default and choose Date followed: Earliest. The oldest follows come first, and they're the ones most likely to have quietly stopped following back.
• Least interacted with. The categories at the top of your Following list include accounts you've barely engaged with over the last 90 days. It's not the same list as non-followers, but it overlaps heavily.

Past a few hundred accounts, checking one by one stops being realistic. That's when it's worth handing the subtraction to a spreadsheet or a scan.

The export is a snapshot of the day you requested it. That's no problem for non-followers, which only need one. To find out who unfollowed you, you'd need two exports from different dates and the same comparison on the followers files.

Why the ratio matters more than the number

On average, somewhere between 30% and 40% of the accounts a typical user follows don't follow back. That is entirely normal, since it includes every celebrity, brand, news account and meme page you've ever tapped follow on.

The number only becomes interesting when you split it by intent. Following a musician who has never heard of you is fine. Following two hundred accounts from a follow-for-follow spree that quietly dropped you is a different matter, and it's the second group that quietly drags down how your account reads to anyone who lands on it. It also counts toward Instagram's cap of 7,500 accounts followed, which matters if you're anywhere near it.

Who to actually unfollow

Resist the urge to mass-unfollow everything on the list. Two reasons: some of those accounts you genuinely want in your feed, and Instagram rate-limits rapid unfollowing in a way that can get an account temporarily restricted. Apps offering to do the unfollowing for you are the ones that trip that limit hardest, which is a large part of why what a tracker asks for matters more than what it offers.

A workable pass, in order:

1. 1Accounts you don't recognise. If you can't place them, they aren't earning their spot in your feed.
2. 2Follow-for-follow leftovers. Accounts that followed you, got a follow back, then left. A tracker will have flagged these when they dropped you.
3. 3Dormant accounts. Nothing posted in a year is nothing worth following. That same silence, on the other side of your audience, is what makes someone a ghost follower.
4. 4Keep everything else. Brands, friends who don't use Instagram much, and people whose posts you actually like are all fine one-way follows.
